Kenneth Alfred Harris, 78, of Dillwyn died August 6, 2023 at his home. Kenneth was born May 9, 1945 at Ca Ira Mill in Cumberland County, a son of the late Thomas Alfred and Mattie LeSueur Harris. He retired as a machinist in the Tooling Department with 48 years service at BWXT where coworkers all knew him as Gravy. He was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Janice S. Harris.
He is survived by his son, David Harris and wife, Greer; sister, Elizabeth “Dee Dee” Dunkum and husband, Marvin Sr.; brother, Edward Lee Harris; granddaughters, Tatum and Larken and step-grandchildren, Meghan, Bobby and Molly; nephews and their families and many friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, Kenneth was also preceded in death by his sister, Pauline "Polly" Christian and his step-sons, Garnett Anderson Shumaker III and Christopher Todd Shumaker.
Kenneth was an avid CB Radio Operator since the 1970s. On the radio, he was known as Captain Jack and RC 80. He had many local operators who were part of his radio family and he was always willing to help with their radio set-ups. He also made many connections with other radio enthusiasts around the world and enjoyed nothing more than being at his desk with his radio and tools nearby. Kenneth also enjoyed visiting the Blue Ridge Mountains, enjoying and riding the Parkway. He and his dog Bandit made many memories exploring any path or trail they could find in Buckingham County, whether it be open to the public or not.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Tina Moss, Kim Ragland, and Kelly Bryant for their care and friendship to Kenneth in recent years. The “Ol’ Buzzard” loved y’all and considered you family.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at 11 a.m. in the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice. The family will receive friends beginning one hour prior to the service.
