Irene Glass Layne, aged 88 of Farmville, Virginia, passed away on December 22, 2018, after a sudden illness, and having been surrounded by generations of her family. Irene was born September 12, 1930, in Halifax, Virginia, one of Harry and Nadie Saunders Glass' five children. She is survived by her sister Josephine Robey, but was preceded in death by her sister Shirley Viar, her two brothers, Edgar and James Glass, and by her husband Carrington Leftridge "Whitey" Layne, with whom she shared three children; Brenda Mahan, Patricia Newsome, and David Layne, all of Farmville and the surrounding communities of Central Virginia. Irene Layne lived life as a devoted member of her community and her church. She will be remembered as having devoted her life to being a mother, whose beloved children provided her with six grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom she held, housed, fed, corrected, and deeply loved. She lives on in their lives and in their laughter, and will always be loved and missed.

The family would like to invite you for visitation at Shorter Funeral Home in Farmville on Wednesday, December 26th, from 6:30-8:30 pm. The funeral will then be held at 11 am on Thursday the 27th at her church, Concord Baptist, located at 12053 Francisco Road in Farmville. The service will be immediately followed by a fellowship meal at the church and then a trip to Trinity Memorial Gardens at 22482 Prince Edward Hwy in Rice, VA 23966, where at 1:30 pm she will be laid to rest beside her husband. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Prince Edward Volunteer Rescue Squad who assisted us in this difficult time.
