Obituary

Herman Hart Covington, Jr., 80, of Farmville, Virginia, passed away on Monday, October 12, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories, countless friendships, and a legacy of kindness, humility, and love. Born on December 17, 1945, Herman was the son of the late Herman H. Covington and Frances Lucado of Farmville, Virginia. Herman is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Sandra McKay Covington; his sons, David Hart Covington (Kimberly) of Virginia Beach and their two children, and Michael Lewis; his sister, Aurelia Boyce of Farmville; and several nieces and nephews. Herman also leaves behind a family who, although not related by blood, loved him as one of their own: David and Candice Ragland and their children, Brittany, Landon, Michelle, and Charleigh. Herman shared an especially beautiful bond with Charleigh, who affectionately called him “Dada” or “Not the Mama.” Their relationship was a true testament to the fact that family is not always defined by blood, but by the love, devotion, and memories shared along the way. To the Ragland family, Herman was so much more than a friend. He was a father, a grandfather, and a treasured part of their lives. A graduate of Prince Edward Academy, Herman proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1965 to 1969. Following his military service, he dedicated 38 years of employment to the Town of Farmville, where he became a familiar and respected face throughout the community. Herman was a Fellowship member of Farmville Moose Lodge #968, a member of Mount Pleasant Methodist Church, and a member of the Farmville Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) #1202. He was also actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America from 1985 to 2010, generously giving his time and sharing his knowledge with younger generations. Herman had a lifelong love of airplanes and aviation, enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and treasured time spent with his family and friends. Whether he was talking about airplanes, enjoying a ride, lending a helping hand, or simply spending time with those he loved, Herman found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Those who knew Herman will remember a man who was patient, humble, gentle, and kind. He was never one to seek recognition or praise, but was always willing to lend a hand to someone in need. He had a quiet strength, a generous heart, and a way of making others feel welcome and loved. Herman’s greatest legacy will not be measured in years worked or organizations served, but in the countless lives he touched and the love he gave so freely. Herman showed those around him that being family has little to do with sharing the same last name and everything to do with showing up, loving unconditionally, and being there when it matters most. His presence was a gift, his friendship was a blessing, and his memory will forever be treasured.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 16, 2026, at Mount Pleasant Methodist Church. The family will receive friends during visitation from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Rice, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made in Herman’s memory to EAA Chapter 1202 of Farmville, Virginia, (PO Box 202 Farmville VA 23901) in honor of his lifelong passion for aviation, or to the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church (C/O Tubby Ferguson, 207 Rolling Acres, Meherrin, VA 23954), in recognition of his love and dedication to his church and community.

Herman will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. Though he may no longer be with us in person, the lessons he taught, the kindness he shared, and the love he gave will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. Family isn’t always about blood. Sometimes it’s about the people who come into our lives, choose to love us, and never leave our hearts. Herman was one of those very special people.
